Supplies needed:
-Coffee filters
-markers
-clothes pins
-spray bottle with water (you don't HAVE to use a spray bottle, but it makes it much easier)
-newspaper or cardboard or something to protect the surface you're working on
As you can see, we decided to go with the classic Mr. Sketch markers today. It made it so that the craft smelled nice as well as ended up looking nice.
First step is to colour your coffee filter. You can use what ever colours you want really, but with these being bats, you might want to stick to some darker tones. Let the kids do whatever they want. Scribbles are great on this, as sometimes the marker doesn't bleed as much, and you end up with lines and what not still showing on the end product, even if that wasn't the look you were going for.
Set your coloured coffee filter on some cardboard or newspaper, and spray it with water, getting it wet all over.
Make sure it's really does get wet all over. Any places that don't get wet enough wont bleed.
You can see the colours bleeding over the coffee filter here.
Once it's wet, leave it to dry.
While the coffee filters are drying, take your clothes pin and either paint, or colour, it black or brown. This will be the bat's body.
I swapped in another one I had done earlier, because the filters can take a little bit to dry, and I wanted to keep going with the craft/tutorial.
Take your dry coffee filter, and fold it in half.
Fold it in half again.
Fold in half again.
Fold it in half one more time.
Now, cut a curved line from one bottom corner to the other, so that it looks like the picture above.
When you unfold the filter now, you'll have the pointed bits of the wings.
Crumple the filter a bit in the middle, and clip your clothes pin on.
Presto!
You have a bat.
We hung ours in the window, on a bit of string so they look like they're flying.
You can't see the colours of the bats, because it's too bring outside....
...so I took a picture later in the evening so you could see them a bit better.
There you have it. A fairly quick and easy Halloween craft that the kids will love, and kids of any age can do.
See you again soon!
